SACS Springtime Garden & Temple Tour
"The Phoenixes dwells in Wutong Mountain,
and the fairies played in the pool of the Heaven". The Fairy Lake Botanic
Garden covers over 587 hectares at the foot of Shenzhen's tallest (944m) mountain
Wutong Shan. The garden was begun in 1983, opening to the public in 1988, it
covers an area of 587 hectares. Known for its special displays of seasonal
flowers, cycads, palms, bamboos and endangered trees Fairy Lake Garden is a
showcase of Chinese gardening traditions.
After touring the gardens we will pause
for a lovely lunch. Those who are interested can visit Shenzhen's largest
Buddhist Temple the Hongfasi. Following lunch Marco Loglio will lead us on an
exploration of some lesser known parts of Shenzhen to visit the unique Dongshan
Temple. Located on Longtou Mountain near Dapeng Bay to the east of the city,
the Dongshan Temple was first built in 1394 and then rebuilt in the Qing
Dynasty (1644-1911). There are four main halls, three dedicated to the Buddha
and one to Guan Yin. The temple was used as a training center for local
guerrilla troops during the anti-Japanese war in the early 1940s.
Not far from this temple, on the northern
slope of Longshi Mountain, is the Longyan Temple, renowned for a spring in the
cave underneath the hall dedicated to Guan Yin. The spring, spouting water for
more than 100 years, not only quenches thirst but is said to facilitate health
as well.
We will explore the surrounding area by
foot so good walking shoes are essential. The tour includes air-conditioned motor
coach, all entrance fees, lunch and guides
